This historically significant Devagiri Rajamaha Viharaya is located in the Bingiriya Divisional Secretariat Division in the Kurunegala District of the North Western Province of Sri Lanka. When you reach Bingiriya town and about 0.5 km from there towards Chilaw area you can see the entrance to the temple on the right hand side. After passing this fork for about 1 km you will come across Devagiri Rajamaha Viharaya.
Ancient sources state that the Bingiriya Devagiri Rajamaha Viharaya was built by King Mahanaga, a brother of the Devanampiyatissa dynasty, in a beautiful setting that showcases the glory of the past. According to legends, the tree had sunk into the earth with the sacred relics when a group of traders had returned with their sacred relics and offerings to a tree and returned to their trade. It is said that King Mahanaga heard this and built a dageba and a temple at this place and built a monastery and a village.According to the Mahavamsa, the dageba was rebuilt by King Agbo 1st and was completed in 1966.

This dagoba is also considered to be the largest dagoba in the North Western Province.
Ancient sources state that Sangamitta also visited this sacred place from here. During the reign of King Agbo I. There is an ancient information that there was a Bo tree in this temple around 563. Historical information also shows that a Bo tree was later planted here under the auspices of the government.
The Tampita Vihara here and the surrounding archeological ruins show the glory of the past. This Tampita temple is made of carvings and paintings belonging to the Kandy era and it is a testimony that it was built during the reign of King Kirti Sri Rajasinghe. This is also the largest Tampita temple in Sri Lanka.
